There are various ways of classifying a network. One basis is using the geographical area the network covers. Local Area Networks or LANs are basically meant for covering a single house, building or office. Wide Area Networks or WANs on the other hand have a much larger footprint. In so-called bus networks, for example, all of the computers share and communicate across one common conduit, whereas in a star network, all data flows through one centralized device. Common types of network topologies include bus, star, ring networks and mesh networks.
